Record run continues: Sensex ends at record high for 2nd day,up 431 points; Nifty tops 20,850

The Indian equity benchmark indices hit fresh record highs on Tuesday for a second straight session as domestic markets continued to be encouraged by state election wins for the current ruling party, even as a global stock rally eased ahead of key US data.At close, the Sensex was up 431.02 points or 0.63 percent at 69,296.14, and the Nifty was up 168.30 points or 0.81 percent at 20,855.10.

Stocks and Sectors

Adani Enterprises, Adani Ports, Power Grid Corporation, NTPC and SBI were top gainers on the Nifty,while losers included LTIMindtree, HCL Technologies, Divis Labs, HUL and Bajaj Auto.

A mixed trend was seen on the sectoral front with Power index up 6 percent, oil & gas index up nearly 2 and Bank index up 1 percent, while Information Technology and Realty indices were down 0.5 percent each.BSE midcap and Smallcap indices ended with marginal gains.

On 5 Dec’23,the Indian rupee edged 3 paise lower to hit its all-time low of 83.41 against the US dollar in early trade on Tuesday, tracking higher demand for the American currency from importers. Forex traders said investors are awaiting cues from the Reserve Bank of India’s monetary policy outcome.The Monetary Policy Committee of the central bank will begin its bi-monthly review meeting on Wednesday and announce the decision on Friday.
